Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hospital Expense Protection Plus health insurance?

No. It is a fixed indemnity policy, not major medical health insurance. It pays set cash amounts when you are admitted to the hospital and for each day you stay, no matter what the hospital bills. It is not ACA minimum essential coverage, and you pay anything above the benefit amount.

What is the difference between the base plans and the max plans?

The base plans (A, B and C) focus on hospital stays: $1,500, $3,000 or $5,000 when you are admitted, plus $150 a day. The max plans (D, E and F) pay a smaller admission benefit but add $75 for office visits and $50 for lab tests and X-rays. Plan F also pays $250 for emergency room visits, up to four a year, and $1,000 for a day in intensive care.

Is there a waiting period?

No. Benefits for a covered sickness or injury start on your coverage date. Conditions you already have are not covered for the first 12 months.

Can I use any hospital?

Yes. There is no network. The plan pays the same set amount at any hospital, and the money goes to you to use however you need.

Can I keep it alongside other coverage?

Yes. The plan pays in addition to any other insurance you have, so many people add it to an ACA plan, an employer plan or a short-term plan for extra cash during a hospital stay.

Is there a membership fee?

Yes. In Ohio, Hospital Expense plans are sold with a LIFE Association membership. In our sample Columbus quote it added $4.10 a month, and your quote shows the exact amount.

How long can I keep it?

The plans are guaranteed renewable to age 65, as long as you pay your premium. Allstate can change rates for everyone in your class with notice.

What is not covered?

Conditions you already have (for the first 12 months), outpatient prescriptions, mental health and substance abuse treatment, and pregnancy except complications, among other exclusions. Ask us for the full list before you apply.
